Privacy Policy
HOPPD is an iPhone shopping app, in testing. This policy says what the app sends to HOPPD, what HOPPD keeps, what it never collects, and the choices you control.
The short version
No advertising, no analytics or tracking tools, and your location never leaves your iPhone. An account is optional: Sign in with Apple keeps your leaderboard name and points when you change phones, and you can delete it in the app. Emails from HOPPD are only for people who ask for them. The camera reads barcodes on your iPhone. HOPPD keeps a record of the products you scan, the store you pick, the label photos and shelf prices you choose to send and, unless you turn it off, what you buy on a trip.
Scanning
When you scan a barcode or pick a product from search, the app sends the barcode or product to HOPPD to get the answer. HOPPD keeps a record of each scan: the barcode or product, the answer shown, the time, the app version, and a random identifier the app creates when it is installed. The identifier is not linked to your name, email or phone number, and is linked to your Apple account only if you choose Sign in with Apple. HOPPD uses these records to improve its answers and to understand which products matter.
Camera and label photos
Barcode scanning uses Apple’s camera and vision frameworks on your iPhone. Camera frames are not uploaded.
When HOPPD lacks a product’s facts, it may ask for a photo of the label. A photo is sent only when you take one and choose to send it. HOPPD stores it, with the same random identifier, to read the label’s facts: ingredients, the analysis, the nutrition panel, the pack size. A weight you type for a product is kept the same way, and so is a barcode you link: when HOPPD doesn’t know a barcode and you find the product by name, it keeps that link so the next scan knows it. HOPPD keeps photos after reading them, because the facts they give help every user.
Shelf prices you enter
If the price on the shelf is different from the one HOPPD shows, you can enter the shelf price. HOPPD keeps it with the store you chose, the time and the app’s random identifier, and your own answers use it straight away. Nobody else sees it unless you also send a photo of the price tag: HOPPD reads the photo within minutes, and if it shows the same product and a price, every shopper at that store sees that price, marked as coming from a shopper’s photo. HOPPD never shows who sent a price. Prices and photos are kept, because they show where shelf prices differ from what the supermarkets publish online.
Your store
You can choose the store you shop at from a list, or let the app find the nearest. The app sends your choice with each request, and HOPPD keeps it with the app’s random identifier, so answers use that store’s prices and the helpers’ board can say where each helper shops.
The app asks for your approximate location only when you tap to find the nearest store, and uses it only while the app is open. It works out the nearest store on your iPhone. Once you have allowed it, the app checks your approximate location again each time you open it, so it can offer to switch stores when you are clearly at another one. The app never sends your location to HOPPD, and HOPPD never keeps it: HOPPD receives only the store you choose. You can turn location off for HOPPD in your iPhone’s Settings and choose from the list instead.
The helpers’ board and Sign in with Apple
Each week the board counts the help HOPPD has checked, such as a label photo it could read. Until you pick a leaderboard name you appear as “a helper”. If you choose Sign in with Apple, HOPPD receives Apple’s identifier for you and, the first time only, the name you let Apple share; that name is never shown to anyone else, and signing in keeps your leaderboard name and points when you change phones. HOPPD does not ask Apple for your email. To delete the account, open You and choose Delete account: HOPPD removes the name, Apple’s identifier, your leaderboard name and your email address, and what you sent stays, unnamed.
Your leaderboard name and HOPPD’s emails
To appear on the helpers’ board by name, you pick a name for it. Everyone who uses HOPPD can see that name, your points and the store you chose; nobody sees your Apple name. Names are checked for rude words, and anyone can report a name, which hides it for them and is checked by HOPPD.
You can also choose to get emails from HOPPD: news and your store’s best swaps. HOPPD keeps your address with the time you said yes and the words you agreed to, and uses it only to email you. Every email has a link to unsubscribe, and you can stop them in the app. Deleting your account deletes your name and your address.
What you buy
When you tap Finish trip, the app sends HOPPD what you ticked off: each product, its price, your store, and the product you swapped from when you took a hop. HOPPD keeps it with the app’s random identifier, and with your first name only if you signed in with Apple. It shows which answers change what people buy, and later lets HOPPD tell you when what you buy is cheapest. To stop it, turn off Share what I buy in You.
Your pets
The pets you add, with their names, species, sex, age, weight and whether they are desexed, stay on your iPhone and, if you use iCloud, in your own iCloud, so a new iPhone gets them back. To give a portion note for a dog treat, the app sends each dog’s name and daily treat allowance with a scan. HOPPD uses them for that answer only and does not store them.
Network data
HOPPD’s servers, run on Cloudflare, receive ordinary connection information such as an IP address, device type and request time. HOPPD may keep limited operational logs for security and reliability.
Data we do not collect
- No email, password, contacts, payment details or advertising identifier. A name only if you choose Sign in with Apple.
- No location: the app uses your approximate location on your iPhone to find the nearest store, and never sends it.
- No sale of personal information, and no cross-app or cross-site tracking.
- No third-party advertising or analytics tools.
- Your list, pets and trips stay on your iPhone and in your own iCloud, if you use it, not on HOPPD’s servers.
Keeping and deleting
Your list, history, trips and pets live on your iPhone and in your iCloud. Deleting them in the app removes them from both, and deleting the app removes the iPhone’s copy. Delete your account in the app to remove your name from HOPPD. Scan records and label photos are kept while HOPPD is in service, because they improve its answers. To have the records from your iPhone deleted, email the address below and we will remove the records we can match to it. Support emails are kept only as long as needed to answer them.
Children
HOPPD is a general shopping tool and is not designed to collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent personal information, contact us so it can be removed.
Independent service
HOPPD is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Coles, Woolworths or any other supermarket. Retailer names, product names and trademarks belong to their owners.
